The Recipe

Yield: 61 treats (using a small cookie cutter)

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 2 cups leftover chicken or turkey (shredded or finely chopped)
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions

1.Preheat the oven:

Set your oven to 375°F.

2.Mix the dough:

Pour the whole wheat flour into a large mixing bowl. Add in the egg, leftover chicken or turkey, peanut butter, and milk. Mix everything together until a dough forms. Tip: If the dough feels a little too sticky, just add a sprinkle of extra flour.

3.Prep your surface:

Lightly flour your kitchen counter or cutting board, and rub a little flour on your rolling pin to prevent sticking.

4.Roll and cut:

Turn the dough out onto your floured surface and roll it out to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a small cookie cutter to cut the treats into your desired shapes.

5.Bake:

Place the cutouts onto a cookie sheet. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the treats are lightly browned on the bottom.

6.Cool:

Pull the treats out of the oven and let them cool completely.

Storage and Freezing Instructions

With a batch this big, you will definitely want to save some for later! Since these treats are made with fresh ingredients like chicken and milk and contain no preservatives, they need to be stored properly to keep them safe and tasty for your pup.

  • Refrigerator: Place the completely cooled treats in an airtight container or a zip-top bag. Store them in the fridge for up to 1 week.
  • Freezer: For longer storage, put the treats in a freezer-safe bag or container (you can separate layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking). They will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Thawing: When you’re ready to spoil your pup, just pull a few out of the freezer and let them thaw in the fridge overnight, or set them on the counter for 10-15 minutes to reach room temperature before serving.
