Liver & Sweet Potato Dog Muffins (Featuring Steve!)

Today is a very fun day on the blog because my official “human treat taste tester”—Steve—is joining me in the kitchen! Usually, he is the one sampling my traditional Southern cooking or helping me eat a fresh batch of sourdough discard onion rings, but today we are switching gears to bake something exclusively for the pups.

Before we dive in, I have to give you a fair warning: if you cannot handle the smell of liver, you may want to bypass this recipe! Cooking beef liver definitely creates a very strong aroma in the kitchen. However, if you can power through the cooking process, I can tell you that the dogs absolutely love these muffins.

Bobbi Jo, our Border Collie and Newfoundland mix, will stay glued to the oven door the entire time these are baking. They are jammed packed full of healthy, whole-food ingredients that your dogs will go wild for. The sweet potatoes provide excellent digestive fiber, the eggs add a healthy dose of fat for a shiny coat, and the beef liver is an incredible source of high-value protein.

Grab your mini muffin tins, open a window if you need to, and let’s get baking!

Ingredients

  • 2 sweet potatoes (cut up and boiled until softened)
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 slices beef liver

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the liver: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the slices of beef liver until there is absolutely no pink left in the center.
  3. Puree: Transfer the cooked liver into a blender and blend on medium speed for about one minute until it forms a paste. Pour the liver puree into a large mixing bowl.
  4. Mash the potatoes: Add your softened, boiled sweet potatoes to the bowl with the liver and mash them together.
  5. Mix in the eggs: Crack the two eggs into the bowl and mix until everything is well combined.
  6. Add the flour: Slowly add in the whole wheat flour, about ½ cup at a time. Stir gently between each addition until a thick batter forms.
  7. Prep the pan: Lightly grease a mini muffin tin using a little bit of olive oil.
  8. Fill the tins: Spoon the batter into the mini muffin tin, filling each slot with about a ½ scoop of the mixture.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  10. Cool and serve: Let the muffins cool completely before popping them out of the tin.

Share these with Bobbi Jo, her siblings, or bag them up to share with all your doggie friends!
